Jade rollers may be small, but over the past few years, jade rollers have gained legions of advocates who swear by its beauty benefits.
The little metal wand—a must for any Sunday self-care—has a smooth baguette of jade attached to one or both ends. It glides on the skin like a paint roller glides on a wall. It’s not usually an applicator, though. Instead, it serves as a facial massage tool, traditionally used along the jawline and under-eye area.
Despite its popularity today, gua sha actually has a long and rich history in traditional Chinese medicine for its supposed ability to reduce swelling and give users a more radiant, even-toned complexion.
What the Jade Roller Benefits?
“As with any facial massage, jade rollers really help stimulate circulation and help with lymphatic drainage, which can help reduce puffiness,” says Susan Bard, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. For this reason, they also reduce scarring and acne marks, says Debra Jaliman, MD, also a board-certified dermatologist in New York City.
And because they’re made of natural stone, jade rollers stay cool to the touch, and they work better if you store them in the refrigerator or freezer, says Sonia Batra, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and Co-host of The Doctors. The stone’s cold temperature may help constrict blood vessels and reduce redness, ultimately increasing skin brightness, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City.
Using a jade roller can also help enhance the penetration of skincare products already applied to the skin, Zeichner says.
Does Jade Roller Work?
While they may be widely touted as skin-care miracle workers, jade itself isn’t much of a healing, and you’re unlikely to get lasting benefits or significant collagen stimulation with a jade roll, Bard says.
But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the time of day. “Any gadget that increases blood flow to your skin will definitely make your skin glow,” says Jaliman. So if you feel good and are a welcome part of your daily self-care, rolling jade won’t hurt. Just don’t expect to get J.Lo’s youthful aura overnight — even in a month or two.
How to Use a Jade Roller for Maximum Beauty Benefits
If you’re going to give it a shot, you might as well do it the right way. For better results, follow this step, says Jaliman.
Make sure your face and jade roller are clean before use.
Apply serum or facial oil to the skin.
Starting at the neck, gently roll up and out without applying too much pressure to prevent irritation. Slowly move your face up to your forehead.
When done, wash the jade roller with soap and water. and store dry.
Store in refrigerator or freezer between uses.
How Often Should the Jade Roller be Used?
It can be tricky to make time for an extra step in your beauty routine. The good news: While you’ll definitely want to use your favorite facial moisturizer or vitamin C serum every day, you don’t have to be so strict about jade rolling—unless you want to. While it’s safe to use every day, or even twice a day — once in the morning and once in the evening — there’s really no set rule, Jaliman says. It’s really about personal preference.
